Established in 1990 by a group of 21 international officials, AMFIE now has some 5000 members from 85 organisations, and manages more than 278 million euros.
Open to individuals who are or have been employed by an intergovernmental organisation, AMFIE is a financial cooperative. It was founded in Luxembourg in 1990 by a group of 21 international officials with long experience in the management of mutual associations. A financial institution under Luxembourg law, it is also governed by the Grand Duchy’s legislation on cooperative societies.
AMFIE is the only financial cooperative open to all international officials and individuals in comparable posts, (including in particular consultants, temporary staff, and holders of long-term contracts with such organisations). Spouses, partners, and children of members may also benefit from AMFIE’s services.
Growth has been rapid since AMFIE was founded. Today the association has members serving or retired from 85 organisations and institutions of the United Nations system, the European Union, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the "Coordinated" organisations.
In 1991, AMFIE had 200 members. Today more than 5000 serving or retired international officials have joined in order to benefit from high quality savings and investment services. In 1991, deposits entrusted to the Association totalled 1.5 million ECU (later to become euros). Today, AMFIE has more than 278 million euros under management. AMFIE’s operations are permanently monitored by internal and external auditors who report half-yearly to the Management board, the Supervisory board and the Luxembourg authorities.
