Communication Mastercard

The Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (BIL) has informed us that in January 2020, they will replace their MasterCards with VISA cards.

VISA cards will therefore be sent to all BIL MasterCard holders (Gold and Worldwide from 08 January 2020). MasterCard holders will be able to continue to use their cards until their new VISA cards are received. The MasterCard will be deactivated from the first use of the VISA.

All MasterCards will be deactivated at the end of February. It will be necessary to activate the new VISA before this date. The credit limit, PIN code and NFC technology (contactless payment) will be the same on the VISA card as on the old MasterCard. Cards expiring in 2019 will still be renewed by MasterCard and the above procedure will also apply.

Once the MasterCard is deactivated, we advise you to destroy it (cut the chip), unless you have made reservations for a future date (eg train, parking…).
You have no formality to complete; the change will be done automatically.

The new VISA cards (Gold and International) show data in a new way: holder’s reference, card number, expiry date and CVV will be on the back of the card and no longer on the front. This will provide better discretion and it will be a first for the Luxembourg market and will represent an innovation on the European market.

Assistance and insurance services remain mostly the same, and the VISA card offers new insurance for your purchases.

The MasterCard Gold will be replaced by the VISA Gold (60€/year) and the MasterCard Worldwide, without the BIL Logo, will be replaced by VISA Gold International (100€/year).
